Why study philosophy of religion?
First, philosophy of religion is a relevant area of inquiry to those who are religious since it provides a context in which religious people can clarify, modify, extend, and deepen their existing religious beliefs. Religious beliefs, like many other sorts of basic beliefs and values, are often instilled in us through a process of enculturation that bypasses the eye of reflection and conscious integration into the rest of our beliefs. This course provides the opportunity for religious people to think reflectively about their faith and its relation to other aspects of human life. Secondly, philosophy of religion is relevant also to those who are not religious. Our perspective of the world consists not only of what we believe to be true, but also what we believe to be false. In other instances, we are merely skeptical and so neither affirm or deny certain claims. This is true with respect to religion too.
