Why study a second instrument? Why study keyboards?
Ideally a vocalist should be able to play an instrument in addition to their singing. Although any second instrument is beneficial, the piano or keyboard is the most universal and useful for the following reasons: 1) The keyboard is the easiest instrument to understand intellectually as everything is literally laid out in black and white. 2) Keyboard training encompasses all the main aspects of music (melody, harmony, rhythm and theory) within one instrument. 3) Keyboard instruments are among the least physically demanding to play at a basic or average level of difficulty. 4) With the right training, keyboard instruments provide very quick and satisfying results for the player. For these reasons and more, piano/keyboard study is required for all music students in college or university.
