Why start singing or piano/keyboard lessons as young as age three?
Some “traditional” music teachers will not accept students until they are older, citing reasons such as the need to wait until the child’s voice is completely developed, or the need to wait until the child can read. Regardless of the reason given, valuable formative years will be wasted. By the age of ten, a child’s brain is already 95% the weight of an adult’s, even though his/her body weight is only about half that of an adult’s. This means that the child’s nervous system is already almost fully developed – and this includes his/her sense of hearing. Furthermore, studies show that the ear responds most effectively to music during the pre-school years, and that younger children tend to memorize words and songs more easily. Perhaps most importantly, they are less likely to have pre-conceived ideas of what they can or cannot accomplish…and are also less likely to have any fear of performing.
