Why sour substances like lemon is used in cleaning copper vessels?
The tarnish on Copper is composed of mostly Copper oxide and some Copper sulfide. These compounds both react with dilute acids and dissolve (to be rinsed away). Most chemicals which are acids taste sour when placed upon the human tongue. Lemon juice, vinegar, and even spoiled milk all have acids in them and taste sour.
