Why some people avoid giving tips to waiter or waitress in restaurants?

giving some extra money for their good service while serving you food I don’t know though I do. I recall one instance of having visited an Indian restaurant in Los Angeles. My son used to add tips in the credit card bill, but before he did that the waitor came to us and, ensuring that he is not being watched by the owner, requested him to give the tips in cash. It seems that the owner was not passing on the tips to the waitor. This was not experienced in American restaurants. In India, while making payment by credit card, I give tips in cash to ensure that it goes to the waitor.
