Why some luxury mechanical watches are so expensive to repair?
Many Swiss luxury mechanical watches such as Patek Phillippe, Rolex, Cartier, Omega costs routinely over $500 or more. It is not unusual to get quotation of $1,000 or more to repair many brands of Swiss watches. The reason is simple and two folds. One is absolute number of Swiss trained watchmakers in the US is very small and original parts needed to service the watches is tightly controlled by the Swiss watch manufacturers without market substitution. Therefore they can command exceptionaly high price for their parts and labor.
