Maybe the answer is quite simple . . . because there really was a universal flood. Most scientists do not believe in a universal flood though because they are Darwinian in scope and perspective. Darwinian evolution is based on a belief that the earth is millions of years old. Evolutionary belief requires the need for an old earth, so they can allow for change over millions of years. In contrast, a creationist view accounts for the earth as created by God. There are some creationists that believe in an old earth (millions of years old) and some in a new earth (perhaps 10,000 years old). I’m a young-earth creationist and I believe there was a universal flood around 6,000 – 10,000 years ago. Cultures started trying to make sense of cosmologies (i.e, explanations for how the world came into being) just several thousands of years ago.
