Why shouldnt I put living people on my family tree?
The website operators place great importance on the security of individuals. One of the most commonly asked security questions from major businesses such as a bank is “what is your mothers maiden name?”. If this information is on a public website it is just possible that someone may use it for fraud or identity theft. The best way to protect against this is not to reveal such information indeed the government introduced the Data Protection Act in 1988 to help prevent such abuse. We must all be aware that not everyone out there is as honest and trustworthy as we are! We suggest that if you want to include living people in your tree then just list them as “living” and omit mentioning their names and life dates. Many commercial family tree software packages can privatise an existing file for you. Check your software for its capabilities if you are uploading a GEDCOM file.
