Why should the National Assembly for Wales be responsible for the Welsh language?
The National Assembly is directly in touch with the issues and developments which will shape Welsh language policy for the future and is responsible for the major public services which make a difference to the language. All political parties agree that it makes sense for the National Assembly to be responsible for passing laws on the Welsh language. The UK Parliament introduced Welsh language legislation three times during the last century but under the current devolution settlement it is unlikely to find time to do so in the future.
