Why should the labor relations community be paying attention to Ford Cleveland today?
Bluestone: This is the final of a series of seven FMCS-sponsored case studies looking at examples of labor-management cooperation across a range of industries and a variety of scenarios. We’ve studied a high school in Arizona, a copper mine, a cereal manufacturer and several others. Why has this attention been paid? Because mediators are finding themselves in situations where attempts to forge joint labor-management initiatives are becoming more prevalent. The agency feels that giving them – and the labor-management community – access to examples of how it has worked, and in other cases how it has failed, is valuable. What’s noteworthy about the Ford Cleveland case is that it’s one of the longest-standing successful joint labor-management actions in the nation.
