Why should specialty teachers be included in the IEP process and inclusion committees?
When the art and other specialty teachers are included in the IEP process not only do the teachers become familiar with the students but also with the other teachers and staff involved. This allows for an environment of collaboration where everyone shares resources and responsibilities for the best interest of the students, which promotes the philosophy of the inclusive learning community. Teachers working together not only create more energy around problem-solving and effective strategies, but they also model people skills for students (Whitworth, 1999, p.10). An example of collaboration across disciplines is the integration of a writing curriculum with an art project component. Donna Mahar writes about her collaboration with other teachers one of which was the art teacher to expand the writing curriculum outside the classroom community. Mahar accessed the talents of her school faculty, other schools faculty and outside community members to enhance student learning of social justice.
