Why should I be concerned about Bisphenol-A (BPA)?
This man-made chemical is used to make polycarbonate plastics (hard plastic) and the linings of some tin cans. There is evidence to suggest BPA leaches into the materials it comes into contact with. The chemical industry claims we are not ingesting enough BPA for it to be harmful, however many governments and independent scientists disagree saying even low doses of BPA can be linked to breast and prostate damage, early puberty and behavioural problems. Previous animal studies have associated BPA with obesity, liver problems and thyroid disfunction. New research also suggests BPA may be linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes in humans. Human and animal research has shown the chemical mimics oestrogens.
