Why should election depend on Sunnis?

0

I’m confused why the media and some world agencies say that the legitimacy of the January Iraqi elections hinges on the participation of the Sunni Muslims. They represent only 20 percent of the population, have subjected the majority of their countrymen to years of tyrannical rule and, in large part, are the main leaders of the insecurity that they claim make the elections not worth holding in January. Perhaps the reasonable among the Sunnis should urge their peers to stop aiding the insurgents, assist in securing Iraq and get to the polls and vote. Minorities have an important and often influential role in a true democracy. Boycotting the elections would only marginalize the Sunnis, by their own hands. Should they proceed with an election boycott, the resulting government should not be deemed any less representative of the Iraqi people. The beauty of democracy is that you are free to vote, or not. But those who choose not to vote cannot cry foul. JIM KENNEDY Bonsall Don’t pick on work
