Why should Christianity and prayer be kept out of the public?
I’m a Christian, and am a strong supporter of the separation of church and state. There’s no reason that prayer should be sanctioned by the public schools. Jews, Muslims and others pray, too; we’re not the only ones. I’ve found that most people who support Christian prayer in public schools would be horrified if a Pagan or Muslim offered to lead the prayers, and that’s simply unfair. It opens up the way for bickering over scores of different religious approaches and proselytizing, and takes the focus off education. Also, it violates the rights of children who do not hold religious beliefs. If you want to pray, then pray at home, at church, or at a private religious institution, but leave it out of the public educational system.
