Why should astronauts know how to SCUBA dive?
ANSWER from Karina Shook on April 2, 2000: The astronauts are trained for their spacewalks in a huge swimming pool. They first must be able to SCUBA dive before they’re allowed to go underwater in the spacesuit. We also teach them some of the spacewalk tasks in SCUBA gear first before they do it in the spacesuit, so that we’re sure they understand the tasks and techniques themselves, before trying it in the spacesuit, which makes everything more difficult.
