The Gaelscoil [1] in Carrigaline is now the largest Gaelscoil in the country. Existing Gaelcholist [2] in Cork city do not have enough space to take in all the students coming from Carrigaline. There is also a large Gaelscoil in Douglas and many of these children also wish to continue learning through Irish. Therefore the parents of these children have asked the Department of Education and Science for a Gaelcholiste in Carrigaline to cater for these children. Some parents from local English speaking primary schools, who could not get a place for their children in Carriagaline’s Gaelscoil, have also asked for their children to be educated through Irish at secondary level. All children in Ireland have a constitutional right to an education through Irish at both primary and second level.
