Why should a Constitutional Convention be convened?

0

The disastrous state of California’s government is of concern to us all. A host of reasons such as term limits, campaign finance rules, redistricting, election laws, and reactionary initiatives have twisted the California government system to the point where it is incapable of righting itself. Further the Constitution, last systematically reformed in 1879, could not envision the exciting and dynamic place California has become. Within a generation, Latinos will soon be the majority in California, and as such, we have a vested interest in California’s future. Already, a new majority consisting of peoples of color exists in our state. Many of these reforms can be completed piecemeal through the initiative system, however for California to right itself, a wholesale, systemic plan must be crafted, and the Constitutional Convention is the best mechanism available to the people to achieve that end.
