Why should a college student consider studying Latin?
The Latin language and Roman culture have profoundly shaped the course of Western civilization, both through the heritage of classical Rome and through the continued use of Latin as the dominant language of the Western Church. Because of this, the study of Latin would be very helpful for history, philosophy, and religion majors. It would also be very useful for those majoring in French or Spanish, in order to help them understand the historical foundations of the Romance languages more fully. Furthermore, students planning to go to law school or medical school would benefit greatly from studying Latin, since the terminology used in those two fields is based on Latin. College students who have had some Latin in high school may wish to continue their study of Latin in order to fulfill the College language requirement. The focus at Erskine Seminary will be on Ecclesiastical Latin, so the vocabulary will be somewhat different from the classical Latin students would have learned in high sch
