Why set up Farm Categories?

The Farm Categories have important implications throughout the operation of Farm Business Manager, so it is vital that they are set up correctly in the first place. In order to be able to produce meaningful reports in the ‘industry standard layout’, each heading code must be allocated to a pre-defined Farm Category. This will then determine how the code is treated. e.g. for a Wheat sales code, is it the main output of the enterprise (grain) or merely a by-product (straw)? These two items are dealt with in completely different ways. The Farm Category will also determine whether this code needs to be linked to certain enterprises e.g. a Main Crop Sales code will only be linked to the Crop enterprises, whereas a Progeny code will only be linked to a Breeding Livestock enterprise. Certain Farm Categories will affect the physical stock of the appropriate enterprise.
