Why Scleral Lenses?
Sclerals combine the neutralising effect of the pre-corneal liquid reservoir with no edge / lid margin contact: the edge of the lens couldn’t be further from the edge of the eyelid, and they don’t fall out. Traditionally, sclerals have been offered in Keratoconus cases so advanced that a transplant is the only option, but increasingly they are being successfully used for lower grades of keratoconus where there are problems with corneal lens tolerance. Because the lenses are not normally in contact with the cornea, there is no sensation from touch, giving maximum comfort. The fitting system is designed by a practitioner for practitioners. Fitting is normally straightforward and fast compared to traditional methods, and complex diagnostic equipment is not required.
