Here in PA the basic degree for professional certification is a B.S.Ed, which is a 4 year bachelor’s degree in Education. After that, within a number of years the teacher needs to earn a certain number of credits to earn their professional/permanent certificate. I believe it’s like 27 credits, and as Master’s degrees are usually around 30 credits, most teachers just put all of those credits together, take an extra course and earn a Master’s degree. (I have a Master’s but went straight through, then started teaching) In many European countries, teachers earn their bachelor’s degree in any subject, then need a Master’s degree to start teaching. This is how Law School and Med School are done in the US, (except those are doctorates) as well as Counselling, and Social Work. I could definitely see the benefit of instituting that type of system in the US, as teaching is definitely a profession you benefit from having life experiences to share with the class. This isn’t necessarily true. Plenty of school teachers have a 4-year degree (B.A. or B.S.) Teachers that have a Master’s degree usually get paid more money (though not much) and have an advantage in the hiring process but that is true for most professions. More education = better opportunities.
