Why scan at a higher dpi?

We scan APS films at a higher dpi of 4000 while the usual is at 3000 dpi. This is because, the quality of the images is enhanced when we use a higher dpi scanning. Scanning at 4000 dpi gives an image quality which is equivalent to that of a 12 mega pixel image.
