September 30 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of James Dean. His power is unmatched in terms of film icons and to re-examine that aura is very appropriate now that this anniversary approaches. Q: How will your film differ from others made about Dean? A: We are focusing on a very short, very significant period — the last year of Dean’s life, essentially 1955. During that time East of Eden was released, and both Rebel Without a Cause and Giant were made. Although he has been forever linked to Rebel and the rebel image, his remarkable artistry and his enormous commitment to acting and his extraordinary talent are rarely examined. His life and his art were closely linked and it is really through the work that we are looking at Dean’s life — his exceptional collaboration with three directors of enormous stature and his truly good work has been our starting point here, and we think that is both an original premise and one often overlooked in telling the Dean story.
