Why release new “old” skates now?
According to the manufacturers Street Cents talked to, the new skates are being released in order to fill the gap left by a leveling off in sales of inline skates. Manufacturers say they’ve taken an old product (the lace-up boot-style skates) and improved upon them. They say the shoes are supposed to be more comfortable than the boot-style skates. And since retro sneakers have been in style recently, it seemed a natural mating of shoes to skates. The new skates are available in a wide range of bold colours and some come with features like detachable wheels. Sales are brisk at the moment, but according to the experts Street Cents talked to – the trend may not last long. They say that’s because of the price. Many of the shops carrying the skates aren’t sure if roller skating will experience a true resurgence – since the new skates are so expensive.
