It is not economically viable to teach Portuguese. I must point out that German isn’t a world language as it is described above, it is an important language within Europe but not in the global market. There are currently changes in the languages that are taught in the the UK as second languages. Traditionally, French and German were the langauges taught in schools. Spanish (and to some extent Italian) has become increasingly more widely taught in part due to the fact that many Brits have holiday homes and I think the David Beckham effect may have also had some influence, but also Spanish is more important on the world stage now due to the increasing economic importance of South America. A baby boom in that region has resulted in an increase in young spanish speakers. However, there are now more Mandarin chinese speakers in the world and it will be interesting to see if that takes off as a second language taught in UK schools. Arabic is also a key world language and will no doubt featur
