If you just looked at where all castles are built, they are on high ground which made them easier to defend ~ the granite of Edinburgh was perfect to build a castle on for this reason ~ very hard indeed for any force to break in.

On a slight aside, I remember reading somewhere that an American couple was pleased that they’d build Edinburgh Castle so close to the railway station. I almost wet myself laughing at that.
