Why pay extra money for a digital signal converter with an analog signal pass through?
First, you would want passthrough if you live in an area where you watch a low power television station. LPTV stations don’t have to convert in early 2009; they have a later deadline, and having the passthrough means you don’t have to swap cables to watch those channels. Second, the analog passthrough could be useful if you have an older VCR or game system that only has antenna output and want to use that. You can connect that as well as an antenna to the antenna input on the converter box using a splitter and watch the analog signal from the device on your analog channel 2, 3, or 4, depending on its settings.
