The Ama Foundation funds Ama Ghar, which in Nepali means “Motherly Home.” Located just outside of Katmandu in the village of Godavari, Ama Ghar was established in 2001 by Shrawan Nepali, who grew up as an orphan in Nepal. He later came to the United States and worked in finance until he quit his corporate life and began doing philanthropic work. Shrawan’s vision was to create a home-like environment for needy children, mostly girls, combining the best practices of East and West. Initially only fourteen children but now forty, these underprivileged children from all over Nepal receive an education as well as opportunities to live healthy and secure lives within their community in a loving atmosphere. What’s the Connection? When Ama Ghar’s first teenage children wanted to pursue a higher education, there was no established fund for it.
