Well, my wife is still trying to figure that one out! Actually, the history of many a small Canadian town is etched from life at the local brewery. They were often the key employer in town. However, they were also the social hub, a big part of the cultural fabric and, sometimes, they were even the bank! The labels tell very interesting stories – from brewery expansion (and thus economic growth) to subsidizing the war effort. They are also more of a challenge to find – especially intact with original bottle and label still married to one another! Other stuff I look for… I also enjoy expanding my collection of tray liners and old Canadian brewery letterhead. Due to the shortage of metals during the war, it was far simpler for the breweries to line the existing beer trays with advertising than to purchase and fabricate more trays.
