Why offer canned food with grains and without?
By offering choices for our consumers, we are helping provide nutritious options for all cats. Cats are obligate carnivores and have basic nutritional needs: protein from a meat, fish or poultry source, Taurine, an essential amino acid, certain other vitamins, minerals, enzymes, & fatty acids and water. That’s basically it. Cats do not need carbohydrates for essential nutrition. In fact, in the wild, a cat will eat only a very small quantity of any grain. So why feed a household cat a diet with one food nutrient he really doesn’t need? Many dry cat foods contain as much as 50% grain, so if you are feeding your cat both canned and dry food your cat is most likely getting a fair amount of carbohydrates from the dry food. Thus, you may opt to select grain free canned cat foods in response. However, if a cat is solely being fed canned cat food, a consumer may choose varieties that have grains included.
