Pumping saltwater from the ocean and shipping it off to the pet stores or suppliers to be used by aquarist was the method of back then. The problem with this method was that it only allows a small window for the water to be shipped and then used by aquarist before going bad (12hrs). With Natures Ocean special formulated NutriSeawater it allows for saltwater to be packaged and placed on a shelf for up to 12months before being used by aquarist.
