CHDs use to be 100% fatal to babies, now with medical technology many babies can live a fairly normal life with the help of surgeries, medication, and heart transplants. They are diagnosed sometimes before they are born by a fetal echocardiogram, or after birth(depending on severity and symptoms it can be diagnosed immediately after birth, or hours, days, or years later) usually if the baby has a severe defect a heart murmur, breathing difficulties and sometimes a blue tint is evident. Or the baby may have an unusually fast or slow or erratic heart rate.
