Why not use plain untreated wood for raised beds?

0

Here are two reasons. First, years ago when we started our present garden we made raised beds out of old growth cedar. These were recycled 2×6 fence boards and were in good condition. After a few years those boards looked fine on the outside but were seriously rotted on the inside since that surface was in constant contact with the moist dirt inside the bed.
