BB: As far as I understood, it was an unhappy relationship, and Duke did not continue to act as this woman’s guardian, or mother—or whatever she was acting as—and they did not end up as friends by the end. We chose not to tell the story for legal reasons as well as creative reasons. We were trying to tell the story of Bernard and Doris. Plus, Heffner’s still alive, so it would be difficult to tell the story—even if we weren’t worried about legal trouble—without potentially offending somebody.
