Why Not Single-Ply Sheet Roofing?
The first and foremost problem with single-ply sheet roofing is that the glue used in the overlaps fails well before the membrane. The Cold Process System is a retrofit system which means there is no air space between the existing roof and newly installed roof. Single-ply sheet roofing sheet roofing requires a layer of insulation or recovery board between existing roof and the single-ply sheet roofing material. This recovery board needs to be screwed down through the existing roof basically making the existing roof dead weight on the building structure, serving no purpose as mentioned earlier. The existing roof is used as a substrate to which the Cold Process Asphalt is fully adhered. The Cold Process Roof adds less than 1lb. per square foot to the existing roof so weight build up is not a factor.
