Why not reduce or possibly eliminate disability payments from Social Security?
I personally dont think thats a good idea, although the Bush Administration recently said it is a possibility. Disability insurance was added to Social Security in 1956, and although most Americans will never use it, it is an essential component of the safety net. It offers protection that most people would feel it necessary to purchase, were it not available through Social Security. If government offered such protection, should it do so through direct funding at a time of record deficits? Disability insurance as an earned benefit that workers pay for through Social Security makes a lot more sense.
