Why not merge with another similar institution in order to realize economies of scale?

As an animal welfare organization, profit is not of paramount concern. While it might be more economically efficient to merge with another shelter, we relish our autonomy. The concern is that we might lose our ability to provide the high quality care and services that we do. Our reputation is extremely important to us. Our theory is that if we provide people with healthy, well-behaved animals, they acknowledge that with donations and return to us when looking to adopt another pet.
