The shrink wrap industry flourished when film suppliers realized that they could give away the shrink wrap machine and still make oodles on the expensive film. Historically, mechanical overwrappers were not terribly flexible. Changeovers were complex from box to box with expensive inventories of tooling being required for each size box. It is for this reason that shrink wrapping grew popular. Many of today’s overwrappers, however, are extremely flexible offering quick change capability with very few change parts. Shrink wrappers make less attractive wraps and are more than twice the cost in film and energy per wrap vs. overwrappers. They are best for low volume or oddly shaped packages. The cost to operate is lower for overwrap. The cost to buy a machine is lower for shrink wrap.
