Why not have a cut for the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup (only top 10 / 30 / 70 get into the playoffs)?
We believe there is tremendous excitement in the possibility of a player from relatively deep in the field making an amazing charge. Regardless of whether there is a cut for the playoffs, attention will be (appropriately) focused on the top of the seedings — those are the players who have been playing best and are the ones who are by far most likely to win. But looking at a recent example, if the points system were in place for 2006, Brett Wetterich would have come from outside the top-70 to inside the top-10 within a three-event period with his win at the EDS Byron Nelson and a T-2 at the Memorial. If those events were part of the playoffs, he’d have a chance to win, since there is no cutoff for who’s eligible. If there was a cutoff — say for the top 70 — he’d have a win and a second but would be on the outside looking in. We don’t think that’s fair, and importantly, we don’t think that’s as exciting as the possibility that he could come from “out of nowhere” to win. By the way, as
