Why not build a hospital in the northern suburbs?
The Congrad Gargett report recommended that a new hospital site be located in or close to the Hobart CBD. This recommendation was based on a number of important factors such as access to the site from all southern suburbs. Building approvals in Tasmanias south for 2006-07 as stated in the Australian Bureau of Statistics, State and Regional Indicators, June 2008, were highest in Kingborough followed by Clarence, Glenorchy, Brighton, Sorell and the Huon Valley, highlighting the need for a centrally located hospital accessible to all in Southern Tasmania (see ABS website). No proposed northern suburb sites are as well located as the Macquarie Point Railyards site which is at the junction of three major arterial transport routes. From an ambulance perspective there are patient care advantages in relocating to the Macquarie Point site. This site is ideal for ambulance access during life threatening emergency situations as access can be easily gained from the north via the Brooker Highway, t
