Why not bring back the student loan forgiveness program?
The Alaska Performance Scholarship is both a merit-based scholarship and a mechanism to drive the K-12 system to higher levels of excellence. Many students leave our K-12 schools without enough expertise in math, science, and language arts. The University of Alaska sees too many high school graduates coming in as freshmen but needing remedial courses. The Alaska Performance Scholarship will provide incentives for schools to offer the courses students need. Parents will also have incentive to ensure their children are taking the courses needed to qualify for the scholarship. With only a loan forgiveness program, the quality of K-12 education doesn’t change.
