Why No Romance Languages in Greece?
Why No Romance Languages in Greece? Friday February 18, 2005 The Roman Empire extended to Greece, so why didn’t the Romance languages spread outwards from Roman Constantinople? One forum poster suggests the following answer: ” In the Roman Empire Greek enjoyed an important position intellectually that Latin never achieved. The New Testatment, for example, was written in Greek and not in Latin and the language of the early church was Greek. This linquistic geography was the eastern Mediterraneannot Western Europe where Latin was the lingua franca. Because Greek was the dominant tongue of eastern Europeans it is no accident that it easily supplanted Latin as the language of the Byzantine Empire presumably the heir of Latin Rome.” – JohnMarinPlease post your comments in this
