Why no LPG cars in the Channel Tunnel?
Q: Why can’t I take my LPG gas-powered car through the Channel Tunnel? It would make my planned summer holiday much easier. Philip Jones A: Dual-fuel cars, or those running solely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), are not allowed in the Channel Tunnel. This is due to concerns over the safety of the gas. Passengers remain with their cars on while on the train and a large number of gas conversions have been found to be potentially unsafe in these conditions. Eurotunnel hopes to be able to allow LPG vehicles to use the service in the future, once a solution has been found. Ferry companies will allow cars running on LPG on board because cars and passengers are separated during the journey. The risks of potential problems are reduced and drivers are required to switch off the LPG tank as soon as they’re on the car deck.
