Why mrsa is a cause of concern in hospitals?
Because as it’s name suggests it is a “methicillin resistant” (methicillin is a type of antibiotics) strain of a type of bacteria known as “staphylococcus aureus”. Basically therefore it’s a strain of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotic treatment, meaning that it’s a nightmare to try and treat someone who unfortunately gets infected with the bacteria. In addition like all bacteria, it can spread easily, which in a closed environment like a hospital with lots of unwell people means that it can spread like wildfire if proper hygeine measureas are’nt adhered to. A large number of people (about 1 in 4) actually carry MRSA, although it is only likely to actually cause an infection in someone who is ill already or has open wounds. Most hospitals now routinely screen people for MRSA before they come in for routine operations, so as that hosptial staff are aware of the individuals that they need to take extra percautions with.
