NetCDF-4 classic model files that use compression can be smaller than the equivalent netCDF-3 files, so downloads are quicker. If they are then unpacked and converted to the equivalent netCDF-3 files, they can be accessed by applications that haven’t yet upgraded to netCDF-4.
