Why many traverlers from the Usa expect Japanese to be friendly??
Most people expect Japanese people to be friendly, because Japanese politeness is an emphasized cultural trait of Japanese society in America. Americans are taught about Japanese concepts of “shame”, “humility”, and the idea that Japanese people value the group more than the individual, so they are more likely to try and please others rather than confront them. There are also people who have heard from someone who has been to Japan that the Japanese are friendly. I have been to Japan, and if people ask me, I can say that in my experience, most of them were very kind and friendly. Actually, I have met Japanese people who are rude and pushy, but it’s not something that I typically say to someone who asks casually, because I don’t want to make others think that Japanese people are particularly UNfriendly.
