Why major in Slavic Languages and Literatures?
The core major of the department integrates the study of the Russian language, literature, institutions and culture. Our overarching concern is with how Russia developed and what defines its unique place in civilization, both in earlier times and in today’s world. Our courses combine different disciplines, traditions, approaches and areas. Our majors usually focus on Russian, but it is also possible for students to arrange majors in Czech, Polish, or Serbian/Croatian analogous to the program in Russian. Indeed, the Cal Slavic department has broad offerings that embrace all of the Slavic world. The department also offers minors in Russian and other Slavic languages or literatures. As students in a small department, our majors benefit from the accessibility of their teachers and the community of fellow students.
