Why Lucy Maud Montgomery?
The connection between a Montgomery fan and the work is kind’ve intangible. I’ve met Kindred Spirits (as the fans are often referred to) who love her work for many different reasons. Something inside me sings out for the universe she writes in, even — and especially — that of The Blue Castle, which is her only book set in Ontario. I can still see Montgomery’s world when I drive through the rural parts of our province. Hearing the theme music to the Sullivan movies makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I can’t get enough. It’s not a “simpler time” or the romance or any of that garbage. But I feel like she is writing about my life, even though she is writing about people who lived long before I did. They are still Canadians. They’re the foundation we’re built on. What’s your favourite of her books? I’ve read The Blue Castle more often than any of her other titles. As a young person I didn’t really see the attraction. Now that I am older, I see that novel as Montgomery’s most
