Why lattice energy is always negative?

0

The convention on energies is that a negative energy is exothermic, i.e. energy is given off. When atoms get together to form the “ionic” lattice, then bonds are formed and energy is released. Therefore the process of bond formation is exothermic and the lattice energy is negative.
