Why January for Arbor Day?
According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, April 26th is National Arbor Day. Many states, including Florida, celebrate their trees on different dates because growing conditions vary across the country.. The April date is inappropriate for planting trees in Florida for several reasons: Trees grown in our area have a shorter dormancy period that more northern species. Our trees have started growth by the end of April, and these new shoots would be easily broken during late spring transport and transplanting. Even when the tops of trees are dormant, the roots are still growing, and January planting in Florida allows for better root establishment in Florida Yards before spring droughts.
